The weather is changing - the sun is finally showing it’s face and the chill is starting to leave the air. Along with the weather change tends to come a period during the year where students are out and about more on campus and even more willing to talk with us! Please pray with us for that reality and for not only conversations to be had, but for relationships to be built.

Just yesterday on campus Sarah Love, Halley, and I got so sit with a group of three girls. We got into some good discussion, but left the conversation all feeling a little sad. There was one girl in particular who had absolutely no hope for what her future would hold. She pretty much thought she was here to live and then die - without any purpose! She did ask us one question though, “Did faith find you or did you find faith?”.

As the three of us sat around afterwards and prayed and talked about those girls we realized that in some small way, we were faith going to find those girls. Who knows what they had to say to each other after we left them? Who knows if the gospel will become real to them? We can only pray for them and hope to meet with them soon again. What we do know is that we took steps of faith to introduce ourselves to them, shared our stories with them, heard what they had to say, and will continue to pray for them as we do for every student on that campus.

Along with all the fun encounters we have as our time passes here in Salerno, there are also days like yesterday - days that leave you with a pit in your stomach just wishing that the truth of the gospel would be clear to everyone. All we can do is be faithful to carry the gospel with us in this city and on that campus while praying for eyes to be opened and lives to be changed.

Thanks for joining us on this journey. We covet your prayers as we seek to do what we’ve been called here for.

-Amanda

“So you are telling me that Christ is the only way?” An Italian student approaching Italians on his campus with us to proclaim the Good News. Sharing the Gospel with 10 students at one time, all eagerly listening. These are just a few of the things we heard and saw this last week from Italians. It is clear that God is revealing Himself and working in these student’s lives. Every year we have students come from America to share their faith with Italians on campus with us during their spring break. It’s called Vision Trip. UCF and Mississippi State are the universities that partner with us in this mission. I had the opportunity last year to come on this trip and share the love of Christ. On that trip was where I received confirmation from the Lord that this was where I was to be the following year and here I am. The above miracles of God happened while Vision Trip was here the last two weeks. Thank you Lord for an encouraging group of students and the mountains you moved.

Amongst our team we have been talking about starting Bible studies on campus, especially after the past two weeks. We believe that God is calling us to do this. Next week we will be starting various Bible studies all around campus. Please pray that God would bless this endeavor and bring students to hear the Good News. Spring is here with new life and God is bringing new life in us and Italian students. The mere fact that students don’t shoo us away but take the time to listen, answer questions, and allow us to share the Truth with them is evidence that people are hungry for God. The Italian people are open, the harvest is ripe (Matt. 9:37) and I pray in a mighty way that the Lord uses us to win this nation that was once on fire for God back for Himself.

Life in Salerno has been more full and busy as it has been since we arrived. When the vision trip students were here, we were extremely busy also, but with American students. This past month we have been more involved in Italian students’ lives than I dreamed would be possible for this year. The relationships with students we have developed are growing deeper, into relational levels past students that we merely hang out with, past students that we are only with to disciple, and into deeper levels of genuine friendships of love and concern. Over the course of our time in Salerno, we have grown to love these students. Love them for who they are and where they are in life. In America, friendships can come very naturally to us because there are not high walls of cultural and language barriers. People from the same country can understand each other on basic levels of cultural context almost instantly; however, when meeting people from other countries developing relationships takes time to fully understand the depth behind their words, actions, heart, and mind. We’ve learned that foreign friendships take work, a lot of work. It takes patience, grace, perseverance, consistency, practice, selflessness with time, desire, drive, and sincere love from both parties to develop friendships on such an intimate level. Only through the grace of God are we experiencing the fruit of His harvest after only seven months of working in the missionary field in Salerno.

As in America, and every country, the students here are in serious need of spiritual guidance. They are being tempted into lives that leave them unsatisfied, being taught by cultural norms to worship idols, such as boyfriends and girlfriends, instead of putting God first in their lives. The large majority of Italians are of Catholic origin; however, I have found most students beliefs are based on words from a childhood Priest, not the Bible or their own personal relationship with Jesus. Unlike America, it is not usual to have other ministries encouraging a personal relationship with God besides the Catholic church. There are some evangelical churches which proclaim the importance of personal relationships with Jesus, but it is not common to find supplementary Christian influence in Italy like there is in America. Much to my surprise I have found the following virtually non-existent in Italy: Bible studies, mentors and discipleships, Christian bookstores, Christian materials (i.e. anything besides the Bible), Christian events to take part in, Christian music (besides what’s listened to at church), small group opportunities, youth group (like Young Life, YWAM, groups sponsored at church, etc.), college ministry opportunities, choir, mission trips, church camp, or Sunday school. PRAISE God for these instruments that God has blessed America with to reach our communities, but these gifts are a rarity amongst the rest of the world. Although the power behind these instruments are not the instruments themselves, but the power of the Gospel and Holy Spirit, I believe that God has called Campus Crusade, or Agape Italia, to help facilitate Italians’ personal relationships with Jesus for this reason. These students do not have mentors to confide in and seek wisdom from, they are not being discipled to challenge and encourage their relationships with God, they are not surrounded by other students their age who are seeking Truth, they don’t have positive, Christian lyrics being sung in their ears, they don’t have people and events that are attracting them to the realness of the Christian faith. Again, these are merely tools that God uses and the real power behind all of these IS the POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, but I do believe that these instruments bring fellowship, accountability, and community which are key in fostering a thriving relationship with Jesus. I believe God has blessed and is using this ministry and our team corporately and individually to help aid in these spiritual areas that Italy lacks. Although the concepts of missionaries, bible studies, mentors, discipleships, and even loyal friendships are foreign to most of our friends, Agape is praying to be only the beginning many stepping stones to a country saturated in Truth and on fire for the Gospel.

Thank you for allowing Jesus to prove His unconditional love for us through you. Each of you are so special to us, and we miss you all dearly. May God bless your every breath, and pulse the fullness life with every heartbeat.

Much Love and many Blessings,

So, today I made a start at reading A Concise History of Italy by Christopher Duggin. In the first chapter I found an unexpected answer to the question that at least most Italy first-timers find themselves asking:

“Where can I find some meat in this place?”

Here is the pertinent text:

“…another, albeit, negative, feature of agriculture has been more permanent. This is the absence of rich pastures and therefore of good quality livestock, especially cattle. The resulting shortage of meat in the Italian diet was a source of frequent irritation to northern Europeans, who were not accustomed to eating vegetable-or fruit-based meals without beef or pork… The lack of pasture also made it impossible to rear strong horses, which meant that farmers had to rely on mules and oxen for traction. This, as much as the thinness of the topsoil or the conditions of land tenure, helps explain why so many of the technological innovations of the ‘agricultural revolution’ failed to take hold in Italy.” (emphasis mine)

I found myself identifying very much with the Europeans mentioned. So, because Italy is a mainly mountainous region, it suffers from not having very many pastures. And the pastures it does have have been prone to flooding and mishandling. Therefore, for centuries they have not had an abundant access to beef or pork causing them to have a diet that does not consist of much meat. This in turn has produced a tradition of eating that does not focus much on the meat, and when it does, it must always, ALWAYS, be eaten separate.

Its amazing to me how a change in the weather can drastically effect the spiritual climate on campus. It seemed that most of the winter students where not very open to engaging in meaningful conversations. We had measures of success, but overall it had been a difficult couple months (mainly November through February). In addition to that, there is typically a more demanding schedule for students during that time, as they prepare for exams which they take in February.

When vision trip arrived, they brought with it the sunny Florida weather! In those two weeks, we had more fruitful and significant conversations on campus than we had all year. The environment on campus literally seemed to change overnight. We’re very thankful, because this weather seems to be here to stay. As does the continued open environment on campus. Please pray with us as we continue to initiate new relationships, and share the hope we have in Christ.

Hey ya’ll just wanted to give a little update about some of the things going on at the University. A few weeks ago we started having Bible Studies and English Hour at the University. It has been really encouraging to meet with students to study the Bible together and to also help them practice English (even though mines not the best).

It’s spring time now and the University feels more alive. The rain has slowed up, people are outside and are open to talk. I feel like some great things are beginning to happen. The other day at Bible study our friend Andrea shared with us his testimony and it was really neat hearing him talk about Christ’s love and how it has changed his life.

Anyway I hope things are well back in America and I’ll talk to you soon

Ciao Ciao

This Vision trip we decided to plan a soccer game or two so we could invite Italians and then use it as a way to get to know them better. We had quite a few Italians come out and kick our butts in the soccer games that we played. Even though we got worked out there on the field, one of the students from america was able to share his testimony to everyone who showed up to this thing. His story of finding God in the midst of playing College Football was powerful and so interesting, the Italians ate it up. Along with everyone hearing about God, we saw that many of the students soon became close friends with us, and we started to see some of them more often for follow up and just good old caffe. Praise God! and thank everyone who came to help during Vision Trip.

ciao tutti! so the last few weeks in salerno have been incredibly busy, but amazing! we had 2 vision trips come, first a group of about 30 students from the university of central florida, and the second week a group of about 40 students from mississippi state. it was crazy having so many americans here with us, but so encouraging and refreshing! i feel like God really used these vision trips in my life to make me remember the reason why i’m here and show me how little my faith has been! before they came i was just kind of in a rut, just going to campus every day, hanging out with my italian friends, just very routinely but not trusting God for much.. i think my heart had just gotten hardened to not seeing fruit so i began to just be ok with it and stopped really believing that God is working here (which He definitely is).. but just going on campus with the american students and seeing their excitement for the Gospel and sharing it was so refreshing! they weren’t scared about approaching big groups of students and getting right into serious conversation about who God is, sin, and the Bible.. because they were only here for a short time, they just went for it and put themselves out there.. it was awesome to see! i loved walking around campus and seeing everyone outside talking to groups of students, having spiritual conversations, making friends.. it made me remember what a blessing and privilege it is to get to be here in a country where there’s so little opportunity for people to hear the Gospel and to be able to share it with them even for the first time. i so often forget! and it was amazing hearing stories and seeing for myself about how the students were so open and wanted to hear about God has changed our lives and study the Bible.. such a reminder of God’s faithfulness and that He really is working in salerno, whether i see it or not! it is Him who does the work, we just get to be a part of it.(john 6:44) anyway, all that to say that i am so grateful for the students who came over and what encouragement it brought our team! God is continuing to work in my life through it and the lives of Italian students.. Grazie Dio!

Ciao tutti!!! The sun is out and we are ready to bust out the flip flops here in Salerno…ok maybe not the flip flops but at least the sun is out! Praise God for warmer weather We just got done with the two Vision Trips in March. It was such an amazing experience! Our whole team was so encouraged by what God did through the students of UCF and Mississippi State. Thanks to all who came! There are countless stories we could all tell about Vision Trip. One of the coolest things about it was the Wednesday when MSU was here when I looked around the Piazza by Bar Ingeneria and just saw maybe 5 huge groups of Americans and Italians sitting, standing, and talking about God, life, sports, ect. So many spiritual conversations were had throughout those two weeks. God showed His faithfulness so much and instilled a new sense of hope for all of us. It’s amazing how He came through for me, especially with reminding me how it’s not about me at all..not how well I know the language, not how many friends we have here, not how well the ministry is doing…it’s all about Him! It was a crazy two weeks, but so much fun and so worth the insane tiredness that followed it. For me, I really loved being on “the other side” of the vision trip since I came as a student last year and got to experience it from a STINTER’s point of view this year.

Now that VT is over, we have been scurrying trying to get in touch with all our new friends so that we can meet up with them. We have also begun having Bible studies at university on Mondays and Tuesdays. We are going through John. So far, I’ve really enjoyed it. English Hour has been going really good too. We have had some great discussions on faith and hope.

Now we have a little bit longer until summer project arrives! I am excited to see what this month holds. Thanks for keeping up with us and please keep praying for the ministry here! Ciao Ciao!!!

It started out as a chilly, rainy day. We got on the bus and headed to campus as we do every day. We were all sitting there, chatting, and I was looking out the window when all of a sudden it began flurrying (snow flurrying that is). Being from Florida we don’t exactly have snow days so you can imagine my surprise as I’m staring out at this winter wonderfulness! When we arrived on campus it was actually snowing! We were all so excited and were laughing, dancing and taking pictures. We had so much fun even though it was SO cold. As we were walking home that afternoon I couldn’t help but be very grateful to the Lord for His creation and faithfulness.
